And sometimes I read a fic that’s been hyped everywhere forever and I’m kinda disappointed. This time it was The Just and Magnificent.

It swings wildly from the achingly beautiful to the laughably bad. Sometimes in the same paragraph. The idea itself, is wonderful. It’s so imaginative, in ways that would never have occurred to me. And there are certain lines of dialogue, or moments or bits of description where you’re going “yes! That, there.”

Like ““Alright then, who’s next?” Susan asked as she held her sword in one hand, and a dagger in the other, “I’m not done being gentle.”
And“ “Kinda busy, Su!” Edmund called as he fought the wraith alone, “Be with you in a moment! Don’t die on me! You won’t like it! It’s about as fun as one of your word games!”
And
“ Though it appeared that Peter led the dance, it was only because Edmund was so adept at guiding him. “

And of course, the sheer length of it is nice-the first volume is like thirty chapters and then there are sequels. So if you really like Narnia fic, specifically P/E and you just want an endless source of P/E, then I can see why this fic would be pretty popular. It was written and posted back when LWW first came out, when there wasn’t that much movieverse fic yet and there was a lot of room for new, inexperienced authors to find a niche and gain a readership.

But it also has a lot of over emotional characters, characters using too much over exaggerated purple prose language, awkward, cheesy dialogue tags, too much crying, arbitrary rules (like Edmund refuses to sleep with Peter until they are married, for reasons that I think were explained but I lost track, the only reason I’d buy is “just to mess with him”) . And one nonsensical pet name used so many times that it gets extremely annoying.

SubOrbital is actually a much better author than this, so it’s excusable because this was SubOrbital’s very first Narnia fic ever, and there might even be a more edited version out there.

It’s not that I’ve never committed some of those same fanfic sins too, I have. It’s very easy to do. It’s just…I’m at the point now where I find it hard to have patience with.
