Kings: Episode Two: Prosperity
A Boy Like That, Will Kill Your Brother, Forget That Boy and Find Another

“You should ask yourself, what does God want from me?”

“To shut the Hell up, sir?”

“So be it.”

I’ve figured out what’s really off about this. Their David isn’t quite strong enough to carry the show on his own, but…I think this version is not *about* him as much as it’s about the Benjamins. Still, he's not quite hooking me yet, I'm not seeing any signs of what [info]japanpeterpan described as the two different usual takes on David. He needs more- he needs more-he needs to at least be doing things by accident that he will later do on purpose.

“Do you hate peace or do you just mourn the loss of your profit?”

Saulas is a politician torn between religious and business interests that control his life. The nation's top religious guy pushes him to go one way, the top business mogul threatens to pull all his funding if he doesn't go the other way. To say nothing of tonight's very interesting development with that new character.

Michelle apparently has a painful and shameful secret that she is afraid David will find out about, Saulas manipulates her into giving David the cold shoulder by reminding her of this secret. Can't wait to find out what it is. The actors in the scene did a fabulous job with it, Saulas knows exactly how to push her buttons, playing on the same thing that all other writers of this story do, which is show him as someone who is such a manipulative politician that he is forgetting how to be a dad (considering what he will do to her later in the Bible).

Not a whole lot of Jonathan in this episode, but in his brief scenes he was still The Evil Gay Guy. They really need to turn that around soon. In this episode, he went SHOPPING. GEEZ. I'll be referring to him from now on as Notathon or Nack for short. It's not even the lack of slash with David so far, it's that they're not even friends. You can't even pretend the slash is there if they're never in scenes together!

The general from Gath says “My people have no hope for better. They look around and see what you have and they want it. They want the dream you gave them.”

HAH. I see what you did there! Except for how in the original story, the Philistines were *more* powerful and wealthy than the Hebrews, not less. That's why the metaphor of the boy versus the giant, it's about the little country versus the empire.

ETA: My versions of Michelle's outfit from this episode.
