SPN S5 review will have spoilers

Sympathy for the Devil

“Yes, Mr. Edlund, I am a fan but I don’t appreciate being mocked”. (ICON PLEASE) Because like many other people who have responded negatively to this new character (and the whole MEB thing), I do not appreciate being mocked. Or being mocked for not appreciating being mocked. Who do they think made their little show on a not very well respected network the success it has been? And as reasonably successful among certain demographics as it has become, it’s still not successful enough that they can afford to tick off the fans. But then , this show has the kind of sense of humor that is so pointed and spot on, which is why it works so well and yet they also don’t know when to stop or why there are groups of people it’s not funny, maybe even disastrous to mock even if they’re a great target. Some fans appear to think it's hilarious and the person who suspects the character was modeled on her loves it- but I hate it.

I kind of thought there was something wrong with my computer ‘s sound during the first scene, but it was actually only half my computer’s fault.

Heh. A Benevolent Supernatural Force rescued them by placing them on an airplane, sort of like a reverse of “Left Behind”. Dean is never going to get over his fear of flying, is he.

“I got no idea, but what I do have, is a GED and a give’em Hell attitude” (ICON PLEASE).

How did Bobby of all people get possessed? BOBBY and how long had he been like that? What kind of cleverness and power would it take to get past the man who teaches all the other hunters how not to get possessed?

I knew the Storage Locker of Plot Devices would come back into the picture, or rather, I’d hoped, because there are so many ideas waiting in there, but I didn’t figure it’d be a red herring. Who is paying the rent on John’s storage locker? Our place puts a second lock on the door if you’re a month late on the rent. John’s been dead for two years, and his kids didn’t know about the locker for a year. The same person who fixes their car, and confirms their fake IDs, I suppose, Bobby.

Who didn’t call the “Dean is vessel of Michael” twist? I know I did. Lots of people did. I think most people didn’t manage to call the part where Dean refuses to do it (unlike demons, angels need consent from the vessel). Someone brought up that maybe Michael is refusing to possess Dean without consent, which is why Zachariah wants Dean to break so badly- if it were up to him, he’d just force the issue. Personally, I suspect Zachariah wanted Dean to give in so badly in order to control Michael-an entity otherwise uncontrollable by anyone but God. He's eager to advance in the company and is more than willing to indulge in a little corporate sabotage to do it.

Sexual assault on SPN and another part

I noticed it too. I’ve noticed it every time, because I’m pretty sure they wanted us to notice. It’s too repetitive and obvious not to be on purpose. And they’re the only fandom I’ve ever been involved in (not about guys in prison) to actually go there. I wouldn’t say SPN even “went there” but they did give the impression that they meant to compare those scenes with sexual assault or implied previous assault (such as the references Alistair makes to his and Dean’s relationship in Hell).

Interesting that the men always go for Dean, and the women always go for Sam (Constance and Meg both attempted sexual assault on Sam, and Meg was “riding”him around for a week before she tried to rape Jo).

It’s sort of annoying how many commenters kept trying to change the conversation to one about “why don’t you care what happens to the women?” Nobody ever said people who brought this up don’t care what happens to the women, but that’s not the same conversation.

Intriguing idea about bloodlines
Why it’s important to remember that this audience just might contain people who actually know Enochian. Not because the show got it wrong, they didn’t, but because there are fans who are looking it up and translating it. It’s not just a cool idea to use for your Applied Phlebotium, it’s a real language really used by real occult workers. Which, btw, is not a language you’re supposed to fool around with*cough*no one around here ever made that mistakeandgotstruckby lightening*cough*

As for the “angels are dicks” idea, doesn’t really bother me. I’d have been more bothered by a storyline which brought up angels and then made it so they didn’t exist in that ‘verse, usually based on the show’s creator not wanting angels to exist, but needing to bring the subject up just to hammer that message home. The idea that angels are not neccessarily beautiful women in white dresses who only dispense white light, wisdom and peace is not a new one to me. Which is why I always find those books in the New Age section that talk about how to contact the archangels for secret wisdom to be hilarious.
