5x03: Free to Be You and Me
There was a lot of squeeing and posting going on after this one aired, I was intrigued to
find out why.
What I’ve discovered since then is that LJ is all a flutter and thrilled with the ep, while the TwoP forum has a lot more complaints and the kind of “snark” that is actually not the slightest bit funny. I'm more in the middle right now.
The “vessel” thing is only “lame and predictable” because you people spend like five hours a day on TwoP speculating about what’s going to happen next. Of COURSE you figured it out awhile ago, you know what they say about monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare. You read/watch all the same stuff the writers do and have the same cultural frames of reference and spend as much time thinking about it as they have. Plus, Kripke and Co read the forums, so it’s not so much that they came up with a lame idea that’s already been over done but that the lame idea was originally yours, which you don’t seem to realize even though you know they spy on the fans.
It’s interesting that the guy playing Lucifer is the same guy who plays “Jacob” on “Lost” ( a character who is basically the god of the island or so it seems).
Nice “TMNT” reference, I love it when the show (or fan fic) makes references to the specific time, place, and social class that the boys grew up in, it makes things more real.
“Bill Buckner” ahahaha!
"Dayenu!" Well, Castiel is a Biblical angel, Hebrew is appropriate. But where did Dean pick it up? He is truly a fount of weird, unexpected knowlege.
WHOO HOO, MAINE! Waterville is a real town, although I can't verify that it looks like the one
we saw onscreen, seeing as how I’ve never been there, or if I have, I do not remember it . They were undoubtedly not filming there anyway, so it doesn’t matter.
The entire bit with the cops and Castiel’s inability to/lack of willingness to lie was hilarious.
“I thought I would just sit here quietly”. AWWWWWW.
Oh poor Castiel. He's never even had sex with another angel. This is adorably sad, because as we’ve seen before, even the other angels appear to view him as a hopeless dork. I bet he followed Anna around Heaven like a little puppy, hoping that one day she’d go to the prom with him.
NITPICKS:
But didn’t Anna say angels were unable to feel, and one of the perks of being human was sex? And since it was Dean Anna said that to, shouldn’t Dean remember that? And his Vessel has had sex, since Jimmy Novak was married and had reproduced, so does Castiel not remember that?
Dean and Castiel left a wheelchair bound, mentally ill man alone in a hospital room that they had set on fire. And I just cracked up at even having to write that sentence. Okay, it was actually magic fire that I guess we’re supposed to assume will not spread or burn the man inside. Let’s hope that no hospital staff sees it, because they didn’t specify that it is invisible magic fire and since Dean and Castiel left and went back to the house to make a second fiery ring to trap Raphael. They didn’t release Raphael, does that mean his Vessel has to remain in the other ring?
I saw a mention of Dean saying “well, that was two hours of my life I’ll never get back” in reference to the plan not working, and that’s why they had to redo it at the house. Will watch again.
I actually liked Barmaid Lindsay. She was like a working class version of Sarah Blake-unfortunately, Sarah Blake is Sarah Blake, and Lindsay didn’t really feel like more than a one episode character.
The entire plan the hunters had (force feed Sam demon blood, then when he “hulks out”, force him to kill demons) was pretty dumb. Did they consider what’d happen if Sam couldn’t be controlled when “hulked out”? He’s not just a regular big guy with some extra strength, he’s the Heir Apparent to Hell and his Exorcism Hand was powerful enough to kill Lilith.
I’m concerned about all the HoYay squeeing because I sort of got the impression maybe the show did this ep to discourage us from continuing on with Dean/Castiel fantasies.
1) Castiel is a virgin. This means he and Dean never got anywhere physically. The show is not
giving anyone "plausible deniability" about whether they are or are not having sex, it just flat
out proved they have not up to this point.
2) Dean assumed Castiel wanted to go to a whorehouse that had women. And it’s all very “See? SEE? They’re straight, look, we’ve surrounded them with half naked women!”
3) Dean reminded Castiel that they’d “already talked about the personal space thing”.
Sam is the one who wakes up in bed with a guy, and that guy is…the Devil, and I think we have another moment of “Is SPN aware of the Unfortunate Implications of what they just showed us?”
On the other hand…
1) Dean straightened Castiel’s tie and shirt collar. While I could see Dean doing this for wee!Sammy, he doesn’t seem the type to go around doing that to other adult men he’s not related to. Especially in public while sober.
2) Castiel’s last night on earth involved Dean, and “special oil”.
3) Dean said Castiel is not dying a virgin on his watch, so presumably they managed to find another way.
4) Bringing a guy to a whorehouse just might be one way Dean would initiate things without having to come out and say “I want gay sex with you”. Maybe somehow he planned to manipulate things so he and Cas eventually ended up naked in the same bed. The sex with a prostitute never happened, anyway.
5) The het sex scene between Sam and Lindsay that was supposed to be in this episode was cut. So, coupled with the aborted scene I just mentioned, I think mostly that no one was going to get to have sex that night.
The show went into some heavier stuff, which will be posted about on thecosmicdance.
