Is this room full of rich white guys really trying to paint Sandra Sotomayer as a racist because she basically said, one time, that she would have a different point of view because she has a different background?
Lindsay Graham is now asking her, in front of all these white men and cameras, if she is "tempermentally suited".
I got all vocal about that, on the subject of how women, especially minority women, are often dismissed by the label of "difficult" or "emotional". My dad says "well, they've said that about male judges too". No, Dad, a man's reputation can suffer if he has a bad temper, but in a man's case, he has to actually be over emotional and/or bad tempered, a woman just has to show normal human emotions. But if she doesn't show them, she has to live with "frigid castrating bitch" jokes forever.
And there is a particular stereotype about Latinas, which these white Republican men are using to their full advantage. She probably shouldn't have said the "wise Latina" thing, because now they can say "well, YOU brought it up first" but... everyone knows what they're trying to say without coming out and actually saying it
This is horrible and I don't want to watch it. I'm so glad my dad is leaving so I can shut it off. I mean, I know they have to do this , because they have to do it for every potential Justice but I don't like watching. |
