Entry tags:narnia

Went to Newburyport.

I was in the fairy shop with my mother, and she went toward the back where the occult stuff is. She turned around and walked out, very politely. But I'd lingered to look at these great jewelled bracelets (that look like...well, they are gorgeous) and I think she thinks I bought something witchy. Even though I didn't even end up getting a bracelet. I think she thinks I bought something and hid it in my bag and she was giving me a discrete chance to do so because she knows I know she knows I know um...yeah. Heh.

We came home on the backroads and I feel a little sick ot my stomach now.

NCOD

There have been rumors and hints for awhile now that William Mosely
might be gay. And yeah, now that his character won’t be *starring* in any more Narnia movies it’s getting safer to possibly…admit that in public.

But I don’t think the author would care. I really don’t. Devoted Christian, yes. But also not a hyper scary American evangelical either. Maybe he would privately disapprove, wouldn't put it past him at all but I think he would also be capable of understanding that there was really nothing he could do about it (because there wouldn’t be, authors don't get to help with casting) and that it’s not his job to police what a bunch of actors get up to on their own time. And I really think that when people say “C. S Lewis wouldn’t like it” they really mean “the worrying bigots who we need to placate in order to make these movies succeed, who think they know what C.S Lewis would have wanted, wouldn’t like it”. And also, Disney, in spite of being a very secular corporation, wouldn’t like it either, because you don’t have to be super religious to think that homosexuality is not a topic for family films. Most people in the entertainment industry seem to feel that way, unfortunately, even when they wouldn't think of themselves as homophobic. This is why Zac Efron has to pretend he’s actually in love with Vanessa. Disney is ridiculously strict about their child stars reputations.

My first thought on all this was, "Oxford in the 1950s was full of 'bachelor dons', so I would be amazed if CSL didn't have SOME friends who were gay."

Having just checked out the wikipage on the Inklings, the informal band of writers who would occasionally gather at a congenial pub and read stuff out to each other, I see that Nevill Coghill is listed as a member. I seem to remember Coghill described as gay somewhere; he was certainly one of those lifelong dons who never married. In addition, this page claims that CSL's childhood friend Arthur Greeves was gay.

So yeah, I think Lewis would not have condemned gayness per se... But, as you say, he might have condemned "indiscretion", and not keeping a zipped lip about your sexuality would probably count as "indiscretion" according to his 1950s mindset.

The odds are certainly in favor of it. I do not see him being shocked by the concept at all.

WOw. I did not know that.

Oh definitely. He would expect William to keep it out of the press, just like everyone else had to keep their sex lives under wraps. Especially when other people are depending on someone to stay in the closet, or everyone gets fired because they might not be allowed to make any more movies.

Thanks for giving me the line to bring down the house at the Oxford college garden party we attended this weekend! The subject of "gay dons" actually came up, followed swiftly by the mention of Maurice Bowra, the charismatic head of Wadham College during the 1930s-1940s.

OLD BUFFER NEXT TO US: Oh yes, Maurice was well-known for being that way! Legend has it he would approach young men on trains, explain who he was, and offer them entry.

[Awkward silence, everyone shifting in seats]

ME: There's a joke in that, but I don't want to be the one to make it.

[Relieved laughter, general release of tension]

Where are you? Having fun, I trust?

LOL! That's great and I'm happy to have provided the line.

Me? A ton of yardwork and cleaning, and then I just kinda collapse in some cool, dark place. Today I was at the lake though, which was alright.
